As our country continues to feel divisive and unstable, it can be helpful to focus on our shared struggles. Today, our listener, Aubrey, shares her story and offers a nuanced perspective on sex addiction. In the Pearls we discuss President Trump's decision to pardon Joe Arpaio, North Korea's latest missile test, and the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey.

You can receive lots more nuance by becoming a supporter of Pantsuit Politics. We hope you'll check out our bonus episodes, blog posts, and videos.

The Pearls

The White House took the concept of a Friday night news dump to new heights over the weekend. We discuss the implications of President Trump's decision to pardon Sherriff Joe Arpaio and what we didn't know about Arpaio. In addition to inflaming racial tensions, the pardon could also impact Robert Mueller's investigation

After the President claiming during his Phoenix rally that North Korea has started to respect the United States, North Korea launched three short-range ballistic missiles. This news comes as the President signed a directive banning transgender military service

Although Sebastian Gorka's bizarre departure from the White House made some headlines, we're a little tired of pretending that people AROUND the President are the problem.

We also discuss the Kasick/Hickenlooper Unity Ticket 2020.

We send our thoughts to all impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Here is the before and after video Sarah discussed.

Beth complimented our friend Haley Stevens, who is running for Congress in Michigan. Sarah complimented Governor of Tennessee Bill Haslam and his position on free community college.

The Suit

Aubrey wrote to us when Anthony Weiner was making headlines to say that she feels sex addiction requires a nuanced discussion. Aubrey's husband is a sex addict, and Aubrey knew this when she married him. As she says, he's her person, and she married him on purpose. Sex addiction makes their marriage complicated, and they are both seeking professional support as they work their way through a struggle more common than we might believe.

The Heels

Sarah describes her blissful experience in a Korean spa. Beth discusses strategies for better organizing her life.

Aug 25, 2017

This week, we heard from the President about his strategy in Afghanistan. Sarah was impressed that according to several reports the President spoke with soldiers before making decision and Beth reflects that most of her reaction was due to her lack of trust in Trump. We also discuss The Daily's reporting on the long-term strategy in Afghanistan with regard to Pakistan in particular.

Then, we watched him give a 77-minute speech during a campaign rally in Phoenix and talk about Ben Carson's presence and his continued attacks on the media. We also struggle with people continuing to support Trump. We reflect on our reactions to these two speeches.

We also discuss presidential pardons and this great Twitter thread on the subject (also don't miss the moment where Sarah confuses Chelsea Handler for Chelsea Manning!).  We also talk about whether or not the Founding Fathers anticipated Trump.

The Pearls

Steve Bannon is out of the White House, and it took him ten hot seconds to be back in command at Brietbart. The President has named Hope Hicks as his new communications director

For our compliments to the other side, Beth appreciates Laura Smith for her compelling, chilling look at the role white women play in white supremacy. Sarah compliments Kentucky state senator, Wil Schroder, and others around the country who are calling for the removal of Confederate monuments from state buildings.

The Suit

Listener Kerry wrote to us about the strange world created by social media. How do we interact with loved ones with whom we have primarily digital relationships around controversial topics? We talk about speech, Confederate monuments, and our social media practices.

The Heels

Sarah is traumatized by Game of Thrones. Beth was asked a really thoughtful question.

And, right now, you can only find it in Virtue Labs’s line of shampoos, conditioners, and styling products.  Not to mention, each formula was created to address specific issues like heat damage, frizz, or thinning hair. Congress has BIG plans for their return from August recess and we are skeptical they can get any of it accomplished.

Listener Caitlin sent us the New York Times editorial Motherhood Isn’t Sacrifice, It’s Selfishness and we talked about whether or not we agreed and what the type of impact this discussion had on those who choose not to have children. We mentioned this book by Caitlin Moran and this essay by Ayelet Waldman.

We compliment Senator Alexander and Senator Murray on their bipartisan approach to health care.
